Cycling In Mallorca In October

Mallorca is a popular destination for riders looking for sun, smooth roads and a cycling holiday. Villa Marpessa is the perfect base for your cycling trip to Mallorca at any time of the year, but autumn and spring bring the cooler but stable weather that makes cycling a joy. With a large garage and off-road parking, Villa Marpessa offers the perfect venue for the storage, use and maintenance of your bikes.

The weather in Mallorca is suitable for cycling all year round, and many cyclists visit the island in all months of the year. Weather permitting, there are two official cycling seasons: February to May and September to October. Even if you are not cycling, there are plenty of activities on the island to enjoy or just lie in the sun on the golden beaches. Please Click here for some ideas for other things to do.

Spring used to be the start of the season, now it is a little cooler in the autumn weeks so that you can cycle in the warm October sun before the end of the season. Training camps in Mallorca are open during the two official cycling seasons and cycling events take place in both seasons.

The roads are well maintained, locals are understanding and considerate, as are the majority of the large groups of cyclists. There are several reputable bike shops on the island and you have a choice of brands, equipment and sizes available.

Easily accessed from Portals Nous, one of the most scenic bike routes in Mallorca is the southern part of the Tramuntana mountain range, which follows the coastal road from Esporles Town to Andratx. Cars are not allowed on the road during busy times, so there is no need to worry about excessive traffic. Like much of the island, the road rolls up and down a series of short hills, but there are no sustained gradients, and when you are on the island, you have breathtaking views along the road, with the Mediterranean Sea on the right and the majestic Galatzo Mountain on the left.

Slightly further afield is the easy access to the mountains of Serra Tramuntana and the popular ride to Cap Formentor, the northern point of the island, and the relatively flat route from Sa Pobla to Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, in the north of Mallorca, between the port of Pollenca, Alcudia and the southern coast road Playa de Muro.

In the 1930s, Italian engineer Antonio Parietti built the road from Port de Pollenca to Cap Formentor, one of the most unique mountain routes in Europe. It is a road that attracts thousands of cyclists to the island every year, and although monstrous to a half-decent amateur, there are 312 cyclo-cross athletes in Mallorca.

In the southeast corner of the island is a beautiful climb up to the sanctuary of San Salvador. The road surface is bad by Spanish standards - miles longer than the average British B-road - and it takes all your wits to make the narrow path up, but it is a climb worth a detour. The ascent leads through dense, fragrant pine trees that offer occasional views, and offers an open, breathtaking view of the monasteries.

One of the most demanding cycling routes in Mallorca is known as the "Big Daddy" and leads through the entire northwest coast of Mallorca. The northwest coast has many picturesque flat roads and is a good bike path. One of the most painful points of the ascent is the Coll d’Orient, which leads down to the village of Orient. The Orient Loop runs along the foot of Puig d’Alaro Sierra, where the road is gently sloping. After an ascent of 9.9 km, the riders descend to the small fishing village of Sa Calobra and turn around, dragging themselves all the way down.

Dense pine forests, dramatic mountain passes and open plains make one of the most diverse and pleasant routes in the Balearic Islands. Most experienced cyclists consider Mallorca's ultimate route to be 115 km at an altitude of 2,500 m, but it is not for the faint of heart. With flat roads and a circuit through the rural south of Mallorca, 60 km can feel like a dead-end even for experienced drivers.
